三相偏心薄盤式超音波致動器之動作原理係利用壓電蜂鳴片金屬背板上的三處螺釘位置所構成之反射點,將往外傳遞之能量波反射並導引回圓心(由於雙相薄盤式超音波致動器的設計並非將壓電蜂鳴片區分為三個等角度間距之對稱結構,故並無能量波反射回圓心之機制),由於三螺釘所生成之反射波會在相同時間點同時返抵圓心,故此三相行進波在正圓心點位置並無法形成一帶動驅動點旋轉之橢圓形運動軌跡。而偏心螺釘之設計即在使三道對稱能量波反射至該處時,彼此所行經之路徑距離有所不同,亦即各反射波抵達偏心點時會有相位差(或行程差)的存在,如此便能在該處形成一環繞驅動點之三相交替行進波,達到驅動轉軸及帶動轉子旋轉之目的。
