The transmission is the heart of the UH-1 helicopter. The manufacturing process has been developed to a point where the rejection rate of the transmission , after final test , has virtually been eliminated. Each gear , quill , and case is precisely machined by Bell to meet the most rigid requirements. The gear box , once assembled , is able to withstand even the most motivation tests that it is subjected to.
When the transmission is properly maintained , the UH-1H can completely fulfill the mission requirements. If , however , the transmission is afforded any degree of in-sufficient or poor maintenance that would allow any integral component to become poorly lubricated or excessively worn , the transmission would very quickly become out of tolerance , overheat and seize , which may resulting serious loss of equipment and lives.
The transmission reduces high engine RPM through a system of bevel gears and a two-stage planetary gear system , driving the mast at a low rotor RPM. Statically , the transmission supports the weight of the mast , mast control system , main rotor and stabilizer bar. In flight , the transmission is the main support link between the main rotor , mast and the aircraft gross weight.
