如圖2中所示係雙相薄盤式超音波致動器之定子結構暨波動示意圖[1],在壓電蜂鳴片金屬背板上60°-120°-180°之角度間距分別鎖上三個直徑2 mm之螺 (如圖2中1、2、3之標示),其中螺釘3之位置被作為轉軸直接接觸之驅動點,藉以取代單相薄盤式超音波致動器中直接貫穿壓電蜂鳴片中心之轉軸。由於螺釘是一個完全固定不動之點、在波的傳遞過程中其將會形成一個反射點,且基於螺釘1、2至螺釘3間之行程距離並不相同,因此當沿徑向與弧向往外傳遞至螺釘1及2之行進波(當然也會傳遞至螺釘3)在反射過程中,會在螺釘3之位置形成具有時間差之波動(螺釘1、2同樣會有相同之效果),而雙相薄盤式超音波致動器之設計原理即是以此交替性的波動,達到推動螺釘3位置上之轉軸產生旋轉效果。

在圖2中,螺釘1、2之位置同樣會有來自另外兩個螺釘所造成之交替性的波動,惟在螺釘1、2上放置轉軸所量測之轉速均較螺釘3位置為低(螺釘2、3對螺釘1並不會形成交替性波動;而螺釘1、3對螺釘2所生成之交替性波動的30°夾角則遠小於螺釘1、2對螺釘3之90°夾角),故我們明確地將螺釘3定義為雙相薄盤式超音波致動器之轉軸驅動點位置,而取名為雙相之意為在每個脈波訊號輸入下會有兩個推動轉軸旋轉之交替性波動。由於來自螺釘1及2之弧向波動為順時針或逆時針方向,將影響轉軸之正逆轉旋轉,故雙相薄盤式超音波致動器與單相薄盤式超音波致動器類似的,在正逆轉的運動控制上並不容易。
