Conclusion: A consideration of the nature of nursing and management is

beneficial because it provides insights which can help practitioners in their

transition from nurse to manager. In the past the relationship between nursing

and management has been presented somewhat simplistically and this paper

demonstrates that the situation is much more complex. If this complexity is

recognized it can be taken into account and serve as a basis for removing

barriers between these two key groups of personnel. Ultimately, this may lead

to the collaboration and co-operation necessary to deliver the responsive

services identified as targets in recent policy pronouncements.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the development of a number of

managerial ideologies. It is the second of two papers which compare and

contrast the development of ideas and ideologies in nursing and management in order to identify the similarities between the two occupations. Management, as a concept and as an activity, has been prominent in recent years, in health

care, and has been presented as the solution to a wide range of perceived ills in

the public sector. However, as Whitley has observed, if we are to understand

management we need to appreciate that its peculiarities and specificities stem

from certain contextual features that encouraged the development of a particular kind of organization for generating, controlling and co-ordinating intellectual

work. If these features and outcomes are examined, then the likelihood of

understanding more about this occupation and its relationship to nursing will be

increased. With reference to the argument developed in the first paper it will be

demonstrated that it is important to use this information as a foundation for

building collaborative relationships.This in turn can serve as a basis for both

groups to learn from each other and adopt a more critical approach to the new ideologies that are likely to emerge.
