In this scenario parents and teacher had identified their goals for Susy .These goals could be referred back to when problems arose they could also be rewritten if needed.Having the goals already identified gave the parents and teacher a common basis on which to plan. Regardless of their educational or socioeconomic level,parents have goals for their children.They state them differently.Some talk about wanting their children to do well in school and/or not to be involved in drugs.Others mention having their children be able to make good decisions and be clear thinkers.Parents have goals. Encouraging parents to recognize their goals provides a powerful guide for them to use when determining which options to implement.Parents frequently respond as Mr. Barnes did.As they become involved in helping their children move to-ward a goal, parents have to deal with the question of how an option such as spanking will or will not help their children attain the desired outcome.In this scenario ,spanking became less of a viable option as the parents focused on what they wanted their child to learn. The concept of goals is empowering .Parents,aware of their goals for their children,have a yardstick,so to speak,against which to assess their choices.
