第一篇 : ( After World War II, much of the world was in ruins. Particularly serious were the millions of people who had too little food, shelter, and medical attention. The United Nations had expectedthis and set up an organization to provide assistance to all areas hit by the war. However, politics very quickly prevented them from taking any action. Neither the United Sates nor the Soviet Union wanted support to go to the opposing side.As the UN's aid was about to be cut off, many began to realize who would truly suffer-the world's children.

This is where Dr. Ludwik Rajchman, a Polish doctor and public health specialist , comes in. He spoke loudly of setting up a new organization to protect children and ease their emergency needs, regardless of politics. UNICEF, or United Nations lnternational Children's Emergency Fund, was extablished on December 11, 1946.

In the beginning, UNICEF's activities were limited to disaster relief, such as providing clothing, vaccinations , and food to millions of starving and orphaned children. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, many nations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East became independent. A new challenge, the fight against child poverty in developing countries, became clear. This would become the second major mission for the organization. Today, UNICEF continues this focus, spreading health care, education, and opportunity to children all over the world.)

After World War II, much of the world was in ruins.

Particularly serious were the millions of people who had too little food, shelter, and medical attention.

The United Nations had expectedthis and set up an organization to provide assistance to all areas hit by the war.

However, politics very quickly prevented them from taking any action.

Neither the United Sates nor the Soviet Union wanted support to go to the opposing side.

As the UN's aid was about to be cut off, many began to realize who would truly suffer-the world's children.

Today, UNICEF continues this focus, spreading health care, education, and opportunity to children all over the world.
