    (這題簡答只有一句話: 四句都對。 詳答很長。)

    這四句都正確,但意思有些不同。

    1, 2 一樣。 3, 4 一樣。 Jane 後面有沒有 is,都沒關係。

    A is no more beautiful than B 可以看成是一種評論,表示 「A (也)沒有比 B 好看」。 換句話說,就算 B 不美,A 也沒比人家強。

    A is not more beautiful than B 才是真正的比較,「A 不比 B 漂亮」,表示 A 比 B 醜,或兩個差不多漂亮。

    所以:

Mary is no more beautiful than Jane.

Mary is no more beautiful than Jane is.

    這兩句是 「瑪麗(也)沒有比珍更好看。」 表示就算珍不美,但瑪麗也強不到哪裡去,也沒比人家美。

Mary is not more beautiful than Jane.

Mary is not more beautiful than Jane is.

    這兩句是 「瑪麗沒有漂亮過珍。」 指珍比瑪麗漂亮一點,或兩人差不多。

    no 和 not 加「形容詞比較級」是很普遍的英語。這比較級可以用 「more+形容詞」 或 「形容詞加 er」,視形容詞的音節數而定。

    1. This building is no taller than that one.

    2. This building is not taller than that one.

    3. This building is no more energy-saving that that one.

    4. This building is not more energy-saving than that one.

Linda is no older than her daughter. (O)

    這是說 Linda 看起來很年輕,不覺得比她女兒老。 或女兒蒼老,Lynda 反而看起來只跟她女兒差不多。

Linda is not older than her daughter. (X)

    這句話有語病,Linda 沒比她女兒「年紀大」? 那她幾歲生女兒? 所以這句話只能用 no,用 not 不好。

Brad Pitt is not more important than Obama. (O)

    這句話比較布萊得比特和美國總統歐巴馬的重要性。 雖然布萊得比特很紅,但他的重要性不超過歐巴馬,這合理。

Brad Pitt is no more important than Obama. (?)

    像 Obama 這種眾所週知的重量級人物,這裡用 no 就很怪。 除非有人輕視 Obama,而另一個人評論說,即使歐巴馬不算什麼人物,那布萊得比特也沒有比較有份量。 或有人吹捧布萊得比特,另一個人說,再重要也重要不過歐巴馬。

    希望這樣解釋算清楚。總結一句,板主的四句話都正確。

    同意 CL 意見。

    對初、高中,或第二外語學習者,A is no more hard-working than B. 可以簡化為「A 和 B 都不努力。」的概念,用以對比 not more hard-working。也有文法書這樣簡化解釋。

    細微的語意,和使用時機,願意多學習的,就多學習。

    2011-06-25 00:13:47 補充:

    CL,

While I said I agreed with you, I made it clear that your interpretation was basically correct. However, there is a minute nuance existing in the expression.

    2011-06-25 00:14:27 補充:

Let's look at the definition that you have provided, please note:

"If you say that someone is no better than a person WHO IS UNPLEASANT OR UNKIND, you mean that they have behaved in a similar way to this type of person."

    2011-06-25 00:29:43 補充:

Under the "if" statement, there is an assumption or qualification -- that person you are referring to is unpleasant or unkind.

    2011-06-25 00:30:15 補充:

WHAT IF, what if the person you are referring to is NOT unpleasant or unkind, or maybe you know he is not super pleasant, but not too bad either. Can you still make the comment "You are no better than he."?

    2011-06-25 00:30:41 補充:

You definitely can. Therefore, whether or not "he" is unpleasant is not an important issue when we make the comment. It just simply means "you are not better in any way".

    Don't you agree?

    2011-06-26 00:51:02 補充:

    CL,

Thank you for agreeing that there are native speakers who would use this expression the same way as I would. Native speakers have been using it in this way for at least since I started to learn English.

    2011-06-26 00:52:07 補充:

Although the meaning of "no" itself in this expression is never the center of our debate, the OED definition serves a good purpose. It provides a good example for my argument.

    2011-06-26 00:53:28 補充:

"They were no more able to perform the task than I was."

Does the speaker condemns that he himself once was a lousy worker? Or he is just simply make a comment that those others were not any better?

    2011-06-26 00:59:55 補充:

You argue that "A is no more beautiful than B" ASSERTS that B is not beautiful. I say it is just an implication. Whether or not B is beautiful, or in the case of the OED example, whether or not the speaker was a sub-par worker is not the main point of the statement.

    2011-06-26 01:01:05 補充:

If, as you claimed, "A is no more beautiful than B." strictly indicates that "A和B都不漂亮", please enlighten me what these statements mean:

    2011-06-26 01:01:55 補充:

"The population of Mexico City is no larger than that of Seoul, Korea."

Does it mean "墨西哥城和韓國的漢城人口「都不多」"? Or it just means the population of the two cities are about the same.

    2011-06-26 01:02:29 補充:

"Tokyo is no more beautiful than Paris."

Does it mean "東京和巴黎「都不漂亮」", or it means Tokyo and Paris are about the same level in terms of beauty?

A is no more beautiful than B 是「A 和 B 都不漂亮」。

    我說 B 漂亮不漂亮,不是這句話的重點。重點是 A 和 B 都差不多。即使 B 不算漂亮, A 也沒有比較漂亮。

    2011-06-26 02:06:30 補充:

    我最後問 CL 兩句:

"The population of Mexico City is no larger than that of Seoul, Korea."

    按照 CL 的理解,是不是墨西哥城和韓國的漢城人口「都不多」? 或是僅僅表示兩個都市人口都差不多,墨西哥城人口也沒比漢城多。

"Tokyo is no more beautiful than Paris."

    按照 CL 的理解,是不是東京和巴黎「都不漂亮」? 或是僅表示兩個都市在美麗的程度上差不多,東京並沒有比巴黎漂亮。

    想想一個日本人在吹噓東京多美時,一個愛國的法國人這樣回答,是什麼意思。

    2011-06-26 02:14:31 補充:

    Louis,

CL 所列 no 的定義是對的。 這裡 no more 不能單獨看。 no 是副詞,修飾後面的比較級, "more ~"。 這跟你說的 no more 不同的。 這裡是 not more ~ in any way 或是 not more~ at all 的意思。 不是 not ~ any more。

be no better than (a) sth

If you say that someone is no better than a person who is unpleasant or unkind, you mean that they have behaved in a similar way to this type of person (Cambridge字典)

A is no more beautiful than B (is) ... A和B都不漂亮

A is not more beautiful than B (is) ... A漂亮程度不會超過B

    2011-06-25 10:50:44 補充:

As a thread on EnglishForum website attests, there are English native speakers who have the same take on this issue as you: www.usingenglish.com/forum/ask-teacher/143866-im-no-taller-than-john.html.

    2011-06-25 10:59:21 補充:

But note how Oxford English Dictionary(OED) and www.dictionary.com define "no" as an adverb used in conjunction with comparatives:

    (OED) adverb

1 [with comparative] not at all; to no extent:

they were no more able to perform the task than I was

    2011-06-25 11:01:32 補充:

    (dictionary.com)

    -adverb

    3. not in any degree or manner; not at all (used with a comparative): He is no better

no more + 名詞: We have no more money in the account.

No more worries about money now!

no more: No more will prisoners have to suffer the misery of being locked in their cells for 23 hours a day.

    no more不能加在形容詞前面.所以第一二句的寫法是錯誤的.

    第三四句的寫法正確. not是副詞,幫助動詞is形成否定的意思.

    more beautiful than是兩者相比較的寫法,

    Jane後面的is可以省略或寫出.

    2011-06-24 22:47:47 補充:

Mary is no more beautiful.這裡的no more是用來修飾be動詞。

意思是Mary is not beautiful any more.

請參閱Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners 2007 edition p.972

    to LionEnglish

    謝謝指教。你說的是對的。

Mary is no more beautiful than Jane.

Mary is no more beautiful than Jane is.

    都是指兩人沒有什麼不同的意思。
