How were the Europeans to reach the East?

How did the Europeans reach the East

Paragraph 2 :The chief problem was technological: How were the Europeans to reach the East? Europe's maritime tradition had developed in the context of easily navigable....

How were the Europeans to reach the East?

= How would the Europeans reach the East?

    were + to do = would do都是代表〔過去的未來式〕,

How did the Europeans reach the East?

Paragraph 2 :The chief problem was technological: How were the Europeans to reach the East? Europe's maritime tradition had developed in the context of easily navigable....

How were ... to ..

    How did... How were to...

If the first sentence is the subjunctive mood (假設語氣), the meaning of it should be different from the second one. Could I have your context?

How were the Europeans to reach the East?

How did the Europeans reach the East?

    >If I were to the mall, I would check it out.

    DaSaGwa,

Are you sure the sentence is right? I would write:

"If I were to go to the mall, I would check it out first."

    It's a subjunctive structure.

Yes, both sentences mean the same and are all correct. Usually "were to" is used more often in "if" like,

If I were to the mall, I would check it out.

However, why grammatically it is used this way, I have no idea.
