The authors, though unknown, of the renowned Aesop Fables伊索寓言, were so clever that they came up with stories in an artful way to reveal its embedded moral in each individual story. For instance, the story of 《The fox and the stork鸛》, in which it depicts that a sly fox invited a hungry stork to dinner. However, due to the fact that the stork’s beak was too long to eat from the fox’s shallow dish, she was annoyed with the cunning fox who tricked her. Finally the stork successfully repeated a similar crafty move in retaliation for the tricky fox’s plot. In both Chinese and western fairy tales, foxes or wolves are often referred to as canny animals with slippery eyes, wearing crafty smiles, and asking slippery questions in a shifty tone, like the wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood.In the late 90’ , there used to be an American film, Free Willy，mainly focused on a talented, wily whale whose name was Willy (note: implying it’s wily as well). The higher the frequency, the more probably we’re encouraged to apply it. ) These are very intelligent physicians who have come up with very clever sounding theories on paper.Emperor: I hereby declare that Rat will represent the first year of my zodiac calendar. Anyone born in this year will be clever like Rat.artful (698*)：clever at deceiving peoplecategory 2： negative (we might look down upon it if someone has such a personality trait. )sly (1744*) , cunning (1083*) ; tricky (3104*); foxy (335*); shifty (275*); canny (381*)
….category 3 to be continued

category 3： wily (474*)
some where in between the negative and the positive; however, it really depends who or what target you want to describe. We can say someone is a wily politician (lawyer; strategist) or we can say it’s a wily dolphin or whale.

The funny thing is that when it comes to humankind, “wily” seems to be a very negative word, while talking about animals, it’s more likely to be a positive one.

In a nutshell, occasionally two people might give different interpretations to the same incident they came across. Once I found a young student got caught cheating on an English exam for writing down some new vocabulary words on his palms.

I personally perceived it’s a bad conduct while one of my friends’ daughters, a 18-year-old girl, commented the boy was ‘clever’.

You call that tricky, I call it smart. How do you call a man with 3 houses? You call him rich; I call him brat.
