For many Americans, it is more a canon than a principle to suggest that what you eat affects your health.

    對很多美國人而言, "飲食影響健康"這樣的說法已經不只是一種原則, 而是金科玉律了.

That very American canon is what lies behind the criticism and disbelief that greeted a recent report that a low-fat diet might not prevent breast cancer, colon cancer, or heart disease, after all.

    就是這種根深蒂固的認知, 導致近來一篇有關低脂飲食可能還是無法預防乳癌,直腸癌,和心臟病的報告面臨批評及否定.

It raises important questions about how much even the most highly motivated people can change their eating habits and whether the relatively small changes that they can make really have an effect on health.

That man is who wrote a book that encourages the practice that people should get up early everyday.

    [encourage]: 鼓勵 [practice]:作法

    2011-11-20 21:38:52 補充:

    訂正一下:

That man is the person who wrote a book that encourages the practice that people should get up early everyday.

    2011-11-21 10:34:40 補充:

    看來您的基本文法概念很清楚.

    英文是結構性很明顯, 高度"模組化"的語言(如果您會組裝電腦, 應該就了解這個意思).

    very=正是; 恰好是

She died in the very room. 她就是在這個房間裡逝世的。

    2011-11-21 10:35:31 補充:

    That=That

    man is=American canon is

    the person who=what(=the thing which)

wrote a book=lies behind the criticism and disbelief

that encourages the practice=that greeted a recent report

    2011-11-21 10:36:05 補充:

that people should get up early everyday=

that a low-fat diet might not prevent breast cancer, colon cancer, or heart disease, after all

About daily communication, Master prisoner is right, but as long as you would like to engage in serious reading or even writing, a sound basis of grammar is indispensable for us non-native users.

    2011-11-21 11:50:52 補充:

Just as we spend some of our time working hard for whatever reasons, so do we "waste," as some say, some time on wonderful things; the same applies to what we do with English.

I remember my third grade son enjoying reading Harry Potter and telling me after he saw the movie that the plot turned out to be different from what he thought he had realized while reading the novel.

But he did enjoy reading it, and that's what counts. Yet we don't always have the privilege of such leisure reading.

That very American canon is what lies behind the criticism and disbelief that greeted a recent report that a low-fat diet might not prevent breast cancer, colon cancer, or heart disease, after all.

    英文長句的重要資訊通常在句尾。你要從後面向前找資訊。

that a low-fat diet might not prevent breast cancer, colon cancer, or heart disease, after.是名詞子句,當report 的同位語。

    that greeted a recent report是形容詞子句,當criticism and disbelief的修飾語。

what lies behind the criticism and disbelief是名詞子句,當主句的主詞補語。

    (1)that very是什麼意思

    very放在名詞前面當形容詞用時,是用來強調的,表示正確無誤。

    (2)what屬於何種用法

    what是帶先行詞的關係代名詞,這裡的名詞子句可改寫成形容詞子句。what = the canon that ...

That very American canon = what you eat affects your health.

    that就是用來標示前面所說的那個普徧認知:[飲食和你的健康息息相關]。

    2011-11-20 14:28:20 補充:

    這份報告的說法違反了前面所說的那項美國人的普遍認知。

    behind 的確有在後面的意思, 而引申出來就是支持的意思.

所以 lies behind the criticism and disbelief 也就是贊同批評與懷疑, 至於 greeted 在這裡是過去式, 是接受的意思, 所以 greeted a recent report that a low-fat diet might not prevent breast cancer, colon cancer, or heart disease 就是說接受 低油脂的飲食並不能預防這些疾病 的研究報告. 因此整句就是對於這個報告持批評及懷疑的態度了.

  • 9 年前

for your (5) - you are wrong.

    the "greeted" in

the criticism and disbelief that greeted a recent report ...

is a vt in past tense as required by "recent" report...

    2011-11-20 11:53:16 補充:

    Now you are talking, indeed!

The recent report that was greeted by the criticism and disbelief ...

means some one made comments against that report in a critical way.

    2011-11-20 11:56:51 補充:

And the very American canon is what lies behind that critical thinking.

    2011-11-20 11:59:29 補充:

Also, your other questions are all pretty simple but just too many in quantity. I don't think I should answer them when I am partying.

    2011-11-20 12:02:36 補充:

Well, the true American cannon is not being criticized - the will to be critical against authorities is the "American canon".

    2011-11-20 12:04:03 補充:

Hey, my boy friends are getting up set that I ignored them just to talk to you. Chow!

    2011-11-20 12:35:16 補充:

    Bath room break...

I think Julie is wrong on this. The entire sentence is NOT about the criticism to the report, but about the will to criticize authorities.

And that will is the very American canon..

    2011-11-20 14:08:23 補充:

Well, even though I like the analysis by Master Louis, his final translation is sort of missing the point. This is mine:

    美國基本精神就是隱藏在

    對於最近公布的關於低脂飲食可能無益於防病的醫學報告

    的挑剔與懷疑

    背後

    (的那種敢於叛逆的精神)

    2011-11-20 14:13:19 補充:

The true takeaway of the original passage is not about the merits in the report nor if the report gained any support from the public - it is about the free speech and will to challenge the authority.

    2011-11-20 14:28:04 補充:

Hey, Dude! I saw your material and it amazed me that you read this boring stuff. Unless you are preparing for certain exam, I really think this is a wrong way to learn English - to do this, you should just get a good and interesting book and read away... I personally found Playboys a good pick!

    2011-11-20 22:29:13 補充:

Ahh, I think I was wrong about the "The very American canon" and start wondering how drunk I was last night. Hiccups!

As Master Kevin stated in his answer, it was the belief and "You are what you eat".

    2011-11-20 22:34:33 補充:

    So, don't hangout with a drunken girl, regardless how cute she is;

Also, Playboys' articles are mostly well-written with tons of unusual insights, even though few (men) are able resist the temptations from the photos.

Wake up dudes, they aren't real.

    2011-11-21 05:04:10 補充:

    Dude,

One problem you have is to take everything literally and that is bad for language learning. What you need is more imagination.

I think you should stop studying grammars and start using your imagination.

That might be the most important takeaway you may have today...

    2011-11-21 10:40:06 補充:

    I beg to differ -

On grammars: you don't need a lot of grammars to learn 90% of the language. Just use your common senses. They are enough for your daily communication in English.

    2011-11-21 10:50:48 補充:

On vocabularies: you seemed only memorizing the direct translations but not the concepts behind the words, such as the word "practice" master Kevin used in his example. Without imagination, you can only recognize the word, but far from knowing it.

    2011-11-21 11:05:29 補充:

Sorry to be so critical on you - I can see you work hard in your endeavor. It is a shame to me seeing your hard work wasted in vain.

    Please stop studying English;

and start enjoying English by reading books that you can appreciate.

Some like Harry Potter, some Frog and Toad; some enjoy Playboys.

    2011-11-21 11:17:23 補充:

By no mean that I am against grammar learning - it is the grammar studying for ordinary language learners I am against. Grammars should be learned when you read a book and see an unusual sentence structure, not by taking the lesson 1 for "Nouns" and lesson 2 for verbs....
