The members of the neurotrophin gene family, nerve

growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor

(BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), neurotrophin-4/5 (NT-4/

5), and neurotrophin-6 (NT-6), have been characterized

extensively for their survival-promoting action on neurons

during development and after lesion (for an updated and

extensive review on neurotrophin physiology, see Lewin

and Barde, 1996). More recently, the spectrum of the

known biological actions of neurotrophins has widened to

include processes as diverse as neurogenesis, control of glial

development, neuronal morphological maturation, and

synaptic function (see, e.g., Barres et al., 1994; McAllisteret al., 1995; Kang and Schumann, 1995; Ockel et al., 1996).

Neurotrophins exert their action by binding with two

different classes of receptors: the low-affinity neurotrophin
