該不該加定冠詞?

”Bono from U2 has been successful in campaigning for the reduction of debts which developing countries owe to rich nations.“

粗體字的部份如果寫“the reduction of the debts"妥不妥當呢?

As people always point out, using a definite article "the" is for specific thing. In this sentence, there is an adjective clause "which developing countries owe to rich nations" to describe "debts". Therefore, it is better to use "the" in front of debts. After all, there are many different debts, but this statement ONLY refers to THE debts that developing countries owe to rich nations. In a word, to add "the" or not to add in "A名詞 of B名詞" still depends upon whether it is specific or not. In your sentence, since it is reduction of the debts, not any other reduction, therefore, again you need to add "the" to "reduction" to make sure people know that it is not any reduction, but the reduction of the debts.

I am not able to type in Chinese, hopefully, you can understand my saying in English.

Adding article can really make an essay or paragraph much easier to read. Lots of time, adding articles is not that controversial. However, like the question you have asked is very vague whether an article is necessary or not.

After all, when people are very familiar with English, all they do with articles is to read the sentence, then determine whether it is necessary to add "article". Such an action can catch about 95% where you need articles.

However, there is 5% that can be missed due to unclearness and undetermined. This is why you have the question. In a word, even americans who use english everyday still have that 5% trouble.

I have lived in a completely English environment for more than 29 years. When I encounter a question like yours, I will need to think over whether it needs or not. Most of the time, I can figure it out (like the question you have), but sometimes I still get puzzled.

Good news is for those situations I got puzzled, the problem will be too minor to ignore or other people will pick it out for me.

I hope my saying about my experience will give you a relief. After all, your saying about adding "the" is very correct. Your concern about how can they make mistake is not necessary.

    2011-12-08 14:49:38 補充:

Yes, they do make mistakes just like you make mistake with writing in Chinese.

    2011-12-08 14:56:49 補充:

as far as meaning is concerned, there is NO big change in meaning, but just "specific" or not. After all, it is just an article. Let me give you an example:

Do 一本筆記本 and 一個筆記本 have any difference in meaning ?
