I think you guys my have taken it too literally. When I studied math in high school, there is a type of algorithm called "leap and bound".
To leap is to jump around the decision/solution tree and eliminate the unfit solutions as early and as much as you can.

Another thing I studied before being promoted was the solutions to Sudoku puzzles - an algorithm was called "dancing link" algorithm that "dances" amongst the branches of the solution tree. That makes all puzzles look very simple.
