In general, "today" will use with "present tense". However, it is better to use time reference point to determine which tense to use is better. For examples:

    (1)

The children are playing baseball today.

In this sentence, you place your time reference point "at" the time when

children are playing baseball, so using present progression tense is better.

    (2)

    The children played baseball today.

In this sentence, you place your time reference point "after" the time when

children have played baseball, so using past tense is better.

    (3)

    The children play baseball today.

In this sentence, you place your time reference point "around" the time when children play baseball, so using present tense is better.

    (4)

The children will play baseball today.

In this sentence, you place your time reference point "before" the time when children WILL play baseball, so using the future tense is better.

I know this kind of point of view is very different from what the grammar book tells you. After all, grammar is a FIXED rule, it has lost its flexibility of the language itself. Like in this question, "today" represent "now", so use "present tense". Nothing wrong, but language is dynamics, so you can use language based upon grammar, or you can use it based upon your actual need (or logic). Therefore, hopefully, this explanation can give you a deeper insight how to use English.

sorry that I have repeated "is better" in my second sentence. Let me rewrite the whole sentence as:

However, it is better to use time reference point to determine which tense to use.

    都對,端看你在今天的什麼時候講的這一句。把你講話的時刻拿去和打棒球的時段相比,來決定該用那一個。

1.The children are playing baseball today.

    2.The children played baseball today.

    3.The children play baseball today.

4.The children will play baseball today.

    這四句都對,祇是強調的重點和表達時的時間點有不同而以,

    1.是強調一整天都會是在打棒球,類似的句子像,

I was watching TV last night.(我昨晚都在看電視)

    2.講此話時應是在晚上了。

    3.此句是表小孩平常是在今天打球。

    4.講此話的時間應是在早上,孩子們還沒打球前。

    看了我的中文解釋,再去看另位大大的英釋,就更清楚了。
