答案是 the thirty-first。 這題是考日期唸法，要有 the。
如果是寫法就不一定要有 the：
英式，日期在月份之前：
31 January, 2012
31st January, 2012
31/1/2012
31-1-2012
31.1.2012
美式月份寫在日期之前：
January 31, 2012
January 31st, 2012
1/31/2012
1-31-2012
1.31.2012
但唸法要唸成 the thirty-first of January 或 January the thirty-first

要填【 the first 】抑或 【 first 】?]
都可以，但意思可能不同。
比賽的首獎稱為 First Prize。 所以沒有 the 的話，肯定是說這個人是冠軍，「贏得首獎」。這種情形不用 the，但用大寫比較好，不用大寫也可以。
Someone won First Prize.
首獎（冠軍獎）被人家抱走了。
要是有加 the ，表示強調順序，所以意思可能變成強調有第一獎項，第二獎項.....裡的第一個頒出去的獎。
Someone won the first prize.
第一(個)獎被某個人贏走了。
這個人贏得第一個獎，不一定是冠軍，也許他是十個項目裡第一個贏到獎的。
當然很多人還是用 the first prize 來表示冠軍，因為他在講話時，心中不是想到「首獎」，而是覺得有冠軍、有亞軍，首獎、二獎，所以感覺上是在講序列，於是就自然說 the first prize。
所以這題 won first prize 和 won the first prize 都可以。

不要寫成 Today is thirty-first of January. ，我已將日期寫法列出來。 31, 31st 是寫法，the thirty-first 是唸法。
