「Yet according to the research, the media have consistently given a picture that violent crime has increased during this same period and, furthermore, that the violence is completely unpatterned and random.」
「Random violence, a vision of patternless chaos that is advanced by the media.」
picture、unpatterned 以及patternless 該怎麼翻比較恰當？
（上文中的 picture 是只真的照片、圖片的意思嗎？還是是別的解釋？）

Master Fantastische has done a nice in explaining "give a picture", so I
will not elaborate it any further.
However, I like to focus on "unpatterned" and "patternless". Even though on the surface both words means about the same, "no pattern" or " lack of pattern". However, they do have some distinctive difference:
unpatterned is defined as: lacking patterns especially in color, plain.
patternless is defined as: without pattern, random.
To explain the difference, let me give you an example:
There are also a few that appear to have patternless silver gray heads and unpatterned abdomens. (this sentence is to describe a kind of snake: silver queen ghost corn snake)
In the above sentence, you can see "patternless" means "random" (means there is pattern, but it is random) , yet "unpatterned" means "plain" (means without pattern to talk about) .
Now let's go back to your questioned sentences:
the first one "unpatterned and random", it uses "unpatterned" instead of "patternless" to give contrast between "plain" and "random", so you can translate "unpatterned" here as "缺乏模式的"
the second one "patternless chaos" it uses "patternless" (means random) to emphasize "chaos", so you can translate "patternless" as "沒有模式的"
Hopefully, this ALL-English will not confuse you more!

typo: .. has done a nice in ... ===> ... has done a nice job in ...

From the Chinese translation, there is NOT much difference between them. However, you need to know the difference in English. After all, why in the questioned sentence, why it uses "... unpatterned and random.." instead of "..patternless and random ..."?

It is because "patternless" already has the meaning of "random". Therefore, using "patternless" will repeat "random".

give a picture意謂「說明」，並非指字面上的「照片」或「圖片」
