"dead beef", "dead face" and others are commonly used in memory management system routing as filler in dynamic memory allocation.

As you said, these are all valid hex alphabets - they are quite visible when you do a hex dump on your core dump. I used the latter to detect run away pointers in C when I was in high school.
Also, avoid using "dead babe" - it will jinx you!

"Dead beef" is very popular sentence in programming, because it is built only from letters a-f which are used in hexadecimal notation. Colons in the beginning and in the middle of sentence make this sentence (theoreticaly) valid IPv6 address.
