The difference why and how:-
(1)each item:-
Each is used in front of a singular noun and is followed by a singular verb;-eg:-Each item has been given its own portion.
(2) When each is used after a plural subject,it has a plural verb.eg:-Nine portions each have their own drinking.
(3)Every is always followed by a singular verb:-eg.Every item in the family is capable of drinking and eating a portion.
(4)Each of,each one of and every one of are followed by a plural noun,but the verb is usually singular:eg:-Each (one) of the portions was slightly different.
eg:-I bought nine portions and every one of them was substantially large.

在最正規的文法中，each 可以作代名詞，但 every 卻不可。
例如：
Each of them has a different dream, which makes it hard for them to collaborate.
(但還是有一些人會把 every 當代名詞用)
有些文法書也會說 each 用在兩個人、every用在三者以上，不過在 applied linguistics 上，並沒有這樣的限制。
