繪本的英文叫PictureBook(圖畫書)。

PictureBook, originating in the West, came into being in the latter half of the nineteen century. In 1658, The World Picture Book, published by a Czechoslovakian educator Y______, was widely acknowledged as the earliest children book illustrated in Europe. Authors in Europe and in the North America such as C------, G-----, and P------- are the outstanding exemplars of the earliest. C---- is named "the Father of PIctureBook" in the modern era.

In Asia, Japan began its embryonic stage in using picture books in the mid-twentieth century, culminating in their popular currency in the 1970s. Now, Japan is a

nation fairly renowned for its profound use of picture books. In Taiwan, PictureBook generally started to come to light only in the latter half of the 1960s, and was in-creasingly used in the 1980s. Currently, Taiwan is still in its initial stage of developing picture books without a strictly-defined and unified theoretical concept.

The term PictureBook is rendered as "Huiban" in Chinese - literally, picture book. However, the etymology of this two-character Chinese term comes from Japanese. Here in Taiwan, PictureBook - Huiban - is often confused with and mistaken for pictorial book, which is a book with pictures. In fact, the former is strictly defined as picture storybook; the latter is more loosely and broadly defined.

Unlike pictorial book, PictureBook is a category of children literary works written in a style featuring conciseness and vividness, and illustrated by subtle and elegant pictures. It is an independent genre of literature stressing the inner relationships between text and picture. It is a work in tandem orchestrated by text and picture, aimed to depict a well-integrated story. In a PictureBook, picture is not si-mply attached per se, and it asserts a role of lifeline in the content. Some picture books are even books without any words. Picture itself tells story.
