According to molecular orbital (MO) theory,?

the 12 outermost electrons in the O2 molecule are distributed as follows:

    electronic configuration of O is 1s2 2s2 2p2

    O2 will have 12 e

    according to MO theory 1s(bonding) 2e, 1s(anti bonding) 2e, 2s (bonding)2e, 2s (antibonding)2e, 2p (bonding)(px py) 4e.

    total bonding e = 8

    total anti bonding e= 4

    bond order is 2
