關於feel的進行式

Ron and Amy Jenkins are expecting their first child, so they are feeling very excited these days.

請問這裡的feeling用對嗎?那什麼時後feel才會用到進行式呢?

不能用feel嗎?

    very excited these days.

    不能用feel嗎?

    我覺得讀起來挺順的; feel用進行式是刻意使語意生動一些.

    用feel不但可以, 而且在修辭上比are feeling更好, 因為前面已有現在進行式

    are expecting表示背景狀態, 後面的結果只要用現在式交待事實即可, 雖然

    重複使用現在進行式不是錯誤.

    我不認為連接詞so前後必須對稱修辭, 例如:

I'm going for an appointment in this weather, so I bring an umbrella with me.

    feel+these days請參閱:

"Feel" is continual, and ":feeling" is continuous. Nuff said.

In my opinion, it shall depend upon the context of the sentence, for example:

    Ice feels cold.

    I am feeling cold.

    2012-11-19 13:50:55 補充:

"Ice feels cold" only when you touch it, otherwise, you don't "FEEL" it. Therefore, the duration of "feel cold" is short and ends soon (once take your hand away), so use "feels cold"

    2012-11-19 13:51:43 補充:

"I am feeling cold" is to describe the situation I am in. If I only stay outside for a few second, then "I feel cold", but if I stay outside for a long period of time, then my feeling cold is continuous and on-going, so it is "I am feeling cold".

    2012-11-19 23:28:54 補充:

Master Dark Helmat has made a good point. His using "continual" is like habit, you do it everyday. As we know "present tense" can be used to describe a habit, for example,

I get up at 6:00am everyday.

    2012-11-19 23:32:12 補充:

As for "continuous", it describes a situation that last for a certain duration without interruption. In the questioned sentence you have. The couple are happy with their expecting child. Such a happiness is not continual, but continuous.

    2012-11-19 23:33:46 補充:

With the above said, you can see using "are feeling" is more suitable for the context of the sentence. After all, their happiness can only last for a certain duration, not a habit.

    2012-11-20 10:10:53 補充:

Let me borrow Dark Helmet's saying "nuff said". I lose my interest in such an obvious question!

    ... are expecting ..., so ... are feeling ...是對稱的平行狀態。所以不宜將are feeling寫成feel,在修辭上會有不對稱的問題。

舊的文法規則是不容許feel在當不及物動詞時用進行式(遠東新世紀英漢辭典p.509),但現在新的字典(Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learner .544)都有這樣的例句了:

I was feeling quite cheerful when we set out.

    Are you feeling ill?
