『They said, "We've lived in Brisbane for a long time"』

→ They said they had lived in Brisbane for a long time.

They said they had lived in Brisbane for a long time (then).

"I wake up every morning at six o'clock," Jack said.

Jack told me he wakes up every morning at six o'clock.

Jack told me that he woke up every morning at six o'clock

Jack told me that he used to woke up every morning at six o'clock.

『They said, "We've lived in Brisbane for a long time"』

→ They said they had lived in Brisbane for a long time.

They said they had lived in Brisbane for a long time (then).

They said then that they had lived.....", 副詞應儘可能貼近修飾對象, 避免被其他可能對象(had lived)隔開.

Jack told me he woke up every morning at six o'clock.

Jack told me that he woke up every morning at six o'clock

Jack told me that he used to wake up every morning at six o'clock.
