    我的認知是:

    large 是大的,如點餐、漢堡、可樂或衣服、褲子,

    通常用 L (Large) 來表示大號的;

    至於 big,則是重大或巨大的,可能在面積、體積、數量......等各方面,

    比一般來的大,例如我們可說:

    "The trousers are too big for me."

    我也上了英國這邊的英文學習網站查詢,它的解釋節錄如下:

    'Big' is a very common word in both written and spoken English; in fact, it's in the top 1,000 most frequently used words.

    'Large', on the other hand, is a less frequently used word and doesn't even make it into the top 3,000 most frequently used words in English.

    The general meaning of both 'large' and 'big' is:

    'of more than average size/amount/weight/height' etc.

    For example:

    'Iryna has got a well-paid job and can afford to live in a house' - OR...

    'Iryna lives in a large house'.

    In these examples, both 'big' and 'large' mean that Iryna's house is of more than average size. Although 'big' and 'large' both mean the same in these examples, 'large' sounds a little more formal.

    'Big' can mean 'important', for example:

    'Buying a house is a very big decision.'

    It can also be used in informal situations to mean 'older', for example:

    'He's my big brother'...

    as well as 'successful' or 'powerful', for example:

    'York is a big tourist destination'.

    Also in informal situations, we can use 'big' to mean 'doing something to a large degree', for example:

    'She earns a lot of money, but she's also a big spender' - OR...

    'I'm a big fan of yours'.

    Finally, quantity words...

    'large', more often than 'big', is used with the following quantity words:

    ...

    另外,我也很樂意去詢問這邊的英文老師,

    看看他們 native speaker 教學專業者怎麼解釋這兩者的不同。

    意見欄裡有大師們寶貴的看法,小女子在這邊獻醜了。

    由於回答內容有字數限制,

    所以我將詢問英國本地英語教師的回覆放在意見欄。

    我問了英國這邊的英文老師,他覺得這個問題很有趣。

    他解釋: "large" 是合理的大 (reasonable big);

    "big" 則通常是過度的大。

    舉例來說:

    The trousers are large. 指的是這褲子是大號、大號的。

    The trousers are too big. 則變成褲子太大了。

    又或者:

    "large salary" 指的是合理範圍的「高薪」;

    而 "big salay" 則可能是超出一般範圍的「大筆薪資」。

    2013-02-22 17:59:45 補充:

    不過他也提到英文有很多固定的搭配組合 (collocation) ,

    就是在那片語中,使用固定的字去搭配。

    例如:講 "big deal(了不起)" 而不講 "large deal" ;

    "a large amount of(大量的)" 聽起來比 "a big amount of" 自然。

    這是他們老外也解釋不出為何要用該字搭配的。

    有時一樣,可互換。有時不一樣。

    學校有時會教抽象的用 big,具體的用 large。但這不是絕對的。

    在美國有些習慣的用法,不一定有道理解釋。

    A large elephant

    大象是具體還是抽象的?

    A large nose 會比 a big nose 大嗎?這也不見得。

    你拿這個問題問美國人,他們也要看你用在什麼地方。

    不實際的, 稱large

    He tends to talk large.

    實際, 看得到的, 稱 big

    How big the birthday cake is!

    Large is bigger than big but smaller than gigantic.

    A very good question, but there is NO clear answer. It is all contextual and conceptual. For example:

    "large sale" vs "big sale".

    2013-02-19 22:43:47 補充:

    "large sale" could mean a sale that is wide in range over inventory in the store.

    "big sale" means that there will be significant price reductions without considering the size of the inventory.

    It would be nice other masters can shed more light on this difficult question!

    enormous, huge, gigantic, big, large, colossal, immense, ... ?

    I know what you mean! Some people want to learn English in 3 weeks or 3 years huh! I would like to ask this question about the difference between "large" and "big", and see what 3-week English can do about it?
