Famous 和 well-known 用法

It is well-known that he is a good musician.

和 It is famous that he is a good musician.

"Famous" and "well-known" are synonyms, meaning they have similar meanings. But there is a difference. The correct sentences would be:

It is well-known that he is a good musician.

He is a famous musician. He is a well-known musician.

As you see, the second sentence can have both words interchangeable but not in the first. What's "well-known" in the first sentence is the fact that "he's a good musician," the idea of his being good.

While terms like "famous facts" do exist in English, usage of such phrases is much less common and sometimes awkward (given in your example).

London was once famous for its fogs.

Brighton is famous as a bathing place.

It is well known that he is a good musician.

He is famous as a good musician.

It is well known that he is a good musician.
