When I was a child in San Antonio, Texas, my grandmother had an ashtray that I loved. She had bought it in old Mexico. It was ceramic rattlesnake, and its coiled body formed the tray for the ashes, while its raised head provided a menacing decoration. It was dark and dusty and very realistic. As I grew up, I always wondered what had become of that ashtray.

Decades later, I was hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains above Los Angeles. As I bushwhacked along a stream, I came across the ruin of a stone house. Everything was shattered and broken and overrun by thistles and weeds. Only the chimney remained standing. I thought I’d see if I could find a souvenir to take home, a bit of broken dish with a design on it or some old tool. As I poked through the wreckage, suddenly there it was: my grandmother’s ashtray, complete and unbroken. Delighted, I reached out to take it. And then its tongue came out. I froze. Its tongue came out again. The serpent was smelling me. With the hair standing up on my neck, I carefully backed away.

With the hair standing up on my neck

With the hair standing up on my neck

So the whole sentence should be something like this

Sorry, my Chinese is not very good.

With the hair standing up on my neck

As I grew up, I always wondered what had become of that ashtray.
