Wet road dust

Table 1 shows the dissolved concentrations of heavy metals, unionized ammonia, pH and DOC during the Phase I test of wet road dust, andtheLC50 values with the ostracod (Kud"ak etal., 2011; Watanabe etal.,2011, Supplementary data Table S1). None of the dissolved heavy metal concentrations in the Phase ItoxicitytestofSt.1–3samples exceeded theLC50 a, values. This indicated that each heavy metal was not a primary toxicant. However, we need to consider the toxicity of heavy metal mixtures. Assuming that the combination toxicity of metal mixtures can be predicted as the sum of the individual toxicity based on a concentration addition approach(Enserink etal.,1991; European Commission,2009), we calculated the sum of toxic unit (TU¼measured concentration/LC50) of each individual metal to predict the toxicity of the metal mixtures(Table 2). The TU values of the heavy metal mixtures in all samples did not exceed1.0, suggesting that heavy metal mixtures did not have additive effects in the wet road dust from all stations. Thus, the decrease in toxicity after Chelex treatment may have been due to the removal of other toxicants.
