"A few" years ago (I'm still a chick), my high school teacher pointed it out. She said "to" could be crossed out, 'cause the grammar book said so. It's better to add "to" to the sentence for sure.

Similarly, "if rules" in grammar book reads: you can replace "were" with "was" as in "if I was a anthropologist, I would..." (BUT that's only acceptable in spoken language)

The sentence you have has some problems. It is better to write as:
"the most valiant thing you can do as an artist is TO inspire someone else to be creative" he once remarked
