英文文法解釋

reported speech / direct specch / request

請問這三個文法指的是什麼??

1. Judy says I jog every day. → Judy says that she jogs ever day.

請問為什麼句子需加入 that 而 jog 要加s ??

2. Cathy said I am happy. → Cathy said that she was happy.

請問 為什麼 be 動詞須轉為過去式 was ??

3. The teacher told me "be quiet". → The teacher told me to be quiet.

請問 為什麼 後面那句需要加上 to 呢??

以上的句子的文法該怎麼解釋呢??

    1. We use a reporting verb like "say" or "tell". If this verb is in the present tense. We just put "she says" (for example) and then the sentence:

Direct speech: I like ice cream Reported speech: She says she likes ice cream

    This is your #1 question

    2. If the reporting verb is in the past tense, then usually we change the tenses in the reported speech:

Direct speech: I like ice cream

Reported speech: She said she liked ice cream

    This is your #2 question

In fact, the reporting speech can be in different kind of tense. For the detail, please refer to the link I will provide late.

    3. (Reported) Request:

Direct speech: Close the window, please

Reported speech: She asks me to close the window

    This is your #3 question

Your question is just a simple part of situation related to this type grammar called "reported speech". It involves quite a few other issues. Generally speaking, it includes: speech, request, order. My saying above is just a digest (摘要) for what is related to your question. Basically, it is just to tell you how to describe what other people's saying, request, and order in your position. If you like to have a completely idea related to this issue, please refer to:

Sorry! The link is also entirely in English. Hopefully, you can understand it well.

"reported statement" always treats whoever makes the statement as THE THIRD person, so the sentence usually starts with "he", "she", "they" or someone's name.

I can type in Chinese, but I am too slow, so it would take quite some time. Besides, if I supplement the Chinese version, it would go beyond the limit. Anyway, if you have trouble to understand in English, I will remove it later.

By the way, even though I use English to answer, I try very hard to use simple English, so if you can read it patiently, you shall be able to understand it well.
