    1.請排隊 "please line up"

please form a single line (along the wall)...

    or

please form 3 lines, one for each cashier...

In US, line is more frequently used than queue. Some how queue has special meaning indicating 'stronger relationship' between each link in the queue.

Another commonly used is file (in US, more frequently even than queue).

File is used almost in all traffic report. For example,

Only single file can pass through the broken bridge.

The file = line of cars (or traffic flow of any type).

My understanding is that "file" is used more on "moving" things and "line" is more static (or moves slowly).

File also suggests "better order" (one by one) than line.

Where does a line start? Does it start at the counter where you receive the service or does it start at the place where the new person join?

Yes, in English, line has no particular shape. Line is only a virtual concept requiring certain 'sequence' on its 'contents'.

However, certian cultures may have more stringent requirements.

Taking CN排隊 for example. It seems to suggest certain degree of "organizational order" in it.

In US, many places (such as federal social security office) use virtual lines where you check in at info counter to take a number to get in one of the 6 lines they have.

In this case, a line does not need to be viewable (or even perceiveable) with its sequence controlled by a computer.

please form (a single) line (along/down the hallway).

please form (a single) file (and move along).

    3 lines, please

    3 files, please

    Lines, please ladies and gents...

Could we form 2 files to the cafe, please, kids.

Do not jump/cut the line, please.

    The line/queue starts there

The line starts from the lady in red cloth/dress.

Please get in line behind her.

    You may enqueue after her.

A-bug, here is a bonus for you:

Please take a number here to get in line (for Dr. Chin or shake hands with princess).

shut up and you may learn something.

where does the line start? I asked at 010.

For sure it is culture dependent and in English:

    2013-10-12 23:47:07 補充:

In the context of the line as a whole, the line starts at service counter.

In the context of enqueuing and the persons in the queue, the line starts at the place when he joins the line.

They are exactly opposite to each other.

As for "enqueue", she gave you the answer she just read from her dictionary.

I use this word for more than 15 years. I used this word daily in high school when studied queuing theory. And you think she could be right?

Give you a few more examples,

    1. Ladies and gentlemen, please enqueue now.

    2. You may enqueue after filling our this form.

    2. You may enqueue after filling out this form. // sorry for the typo.

tp prove my point at 018,

When you see a line and ask any one in line

    "where does the line START?"

    but never,

    "where does the line END?"

When you see soemone is cutting in line

    You will say:

"Dude, the line STARTs there. Get in line, would you?"

    but never,

    "The line ENDs there..."

But if you ask a space designer of a theater on how she will place the ticket queues, she will say "the lines START here (at the ticket counters) and may END there".

That is the point I want to make and the Lolipop in answer 001 fails to observe.

I wrote comment 010 way before answering the post. I wrote 010 to see if A-bug is able to participate in the discussion.

    1. you are NOT qualified to judge the correctness of my answer, with your limited English knowledge.

    2. You also have little real-live English experiences and almost all you know is from a few text books whatever they used in TW.

    3. as you said on the other post - all your criticisms to you were "不說妳的司馬昭之心, 大家翻的好不好、錯不錯, 不是妳說了算. "

You are a big fat hypocrite.

All your criticism to others are "necessary corrections to benefit the confused learners" while others to you are "evil deeds."

What a hyportie (with voting troops who never came to English board, except when voting for her.)

    What a big fat HYPOCRITE...

Not at all, what I said was all common sense in the daily life of anyone in USA. I was surprised by the strong and uncalled-for reaction from the old woman.

Also, why don't you also stop labeling your answer? Of course, you want your voting troops simply vote for the answers with your name or "Infinito" or "cavalier"?

如果是告訴某人要去排隊(隊伍已經存在),就請他(們)"please get in a line;或是join a queue"。

    Please line up.

    Please queue up.

Please don't cut in line.

Please don't jump the line.

Please don't jump the queue.

    Please don't queue-jump.

    No queue-jumping, please.

The end of the line/queue is over there.

The lady in red is where the end of the line/queue is.

    Please line/queue up behind her.

Please join the queue behind her.

    2013-10-12 08:16:54 補充:

    樓下大大也說明得很好, 值得參考, 除了有個錯誤在兩處;

隊伍的起始處是begin/beginning或start, 尾端新排處室the end of the line.

    >Where does a line start? Does it start at the counter where you receive the service or

    >does it start at the place where the new person join?

    卻未加說明, 恐怕是對自己的標新立異用法有些思維混亂?

    2013-10-12 08:22:17 補充:

    我可以肯定指出: "Where does the line start?"問的是起始處, 而不是尾端;

    要新加入隊伍的那一端才是尾端(end of the line).

    正確理解:

One should join a line/queue at its end, and not where it starts or by cutting in.

You may enqueue after her. (X)

You may enqueue yourself after her. (O)

The teacher enqueues Tommy behind me to get his prize. (O)

    >What she wants is win/win/win.

You're describing yourself. I've never had any voting troop. Your comments are simply out of jealousy. If those voting my answers are my voting troops, you have your own all the time, too.

That's nothing wrong or against any rules. You write emails a lot for the same

purpose as well, while asking or not asking to vote yours does not make any

    difference.

Infinito and Cavalier are my team members, and will certainly vote for me in

case of need. A person like you never has such friends. You're simply not

eligible to criticize. Shame on you.
