If John were to resign and if Henry were elected to take his place, we should have more vigorous leadership.

We are to have an examination tomorrow.
= We shall have an examination tomorrow.
She is to be here by ten o'clock.
= She will be here by ten o'clock.
were elected與were to resign在形式上是對等的，都是主要動詞were＋主詞補語。

If green plants should disappear some day, there would hardly be any life on the earth.
If the string should break, the skite would fly away from your hand.

If John were to resign and Henry were elected to take his place, we should have more vigorous leadership.
John were to resign.
Henry were elected.
If John were to resign and Henry were elected to take his place 用來修飾後面的"主要"子句we should have more vigorous leadership

1.be + to + V 表示未來式 ，例如:John is to resign.
2. Henry were elected to take his place
