The next morning I caught a taxi north of Yulin, where the Great Wall ran through the desert. Tourists rarely came to see the wall here, because it was unrestored and the northern Shaanxi roads were so bad.

There was no mention of the wall in my guidebook, but I had a Chinese map of the province that marked the ruins clearly.

The cabbie took me to a big Ming Dynasty fort that stood five miles outside of town, where Yulin's irrigated fields ended and the desert began.

The next morning I caught a taxi north of Yulin, where the Great Wall ran through the desert.

    north of Yulin

I looked out at the empty landscape, at the hard low line of the horizon, and I realised why they had built the wall here.

    look at : 注視

the hard low line of the horizon:

I caught a taxi north of Yulin....

I caught a taxi "heading" north of Yulin....

(搭)計程車是動態, north of xxx應是「朝北」, 若是「在北」應加介系詞at north of xxx.

If you drive east of Payson about 10 miles on Arizona 260, you will see a road sign heralding, "Test Area,...

north of = on the north side of a place

    north of Yulin是用來修飾述部caught a taxi的修飾語

p.1016 Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners 2007 edition

    north 2 adv用法

The village lies 15 miles north of the town.

...north of Yulin, where the Great Wall ran through the desert

at the hard low line of the horizone

hard= harsh or unpleasant to the sense

    說明at the empty landscape裡的empty landscape為何empty

    因為下一句用了一個 here(表示本段的地理座標在此),所以

The next morning I caught a taxi north of Yulin, where the Great Wall ran through the desert. =
