請問以下句子中that 引導的子句的用法

以下這句 He is overjoyed that he is going to be a father. 中 that 引導的是名詞子句嗎? 但前面 overjoyed 是形容詞啊? 若說是同位語也怪 請幫忙解釋 謝謝

He is overjoyed that he is going to be a father.

that he is going to be a father 在這裡是名詞子句當形容詞 overjoyed 的補語。 英語稱為 adjective complement。

因為只講 He is overjoyed 無法讓人家清楚知道什麼事讓他 overjoyed,所以後面 that 子句就是在補充說明 overjoyed 的事情,因而是名詞子句。

    這種使用名詞子句當形容詞補語的情形很多,例如:

I am happy that he came back safe.

    我很高興他安全回來。

You may be surprised that I wear makeup.

    你也許訝異我有化妝。

    Master DSG, 您提的兩個句子都不會存在。

"He overjoys that he is going to be a father." 不符合習慣說法,人會感到高興,但人不會讓事情高興,所以一般會說: "He is overjoyed that he is ......",而不會說 "He enjoys that...".

"It is surprised to him.." 也一樣。 事情不會感到 surprised,所以也不會有這種說法。

typo: (第二段) .... 而不會說 "He overjoys that...."

第二句如果是用 "It is a surprise to him that....." 或 "It is surprising that ...",那 that 子句就是真主詞, it 是虛主詞。

    如此,就跟版主所問句型不同。不過在句構上,that 子句還是名詞子句,只是功能不同。

    近來看到您偶而也會用文法解釋,您可千萬別染上我的壞習慣!

He is overjoyed that he is going to be a father. 中 that 所引導的是名詞子句。因為that子句不受介系詞的管束 ,所以當主詞補語的overjoyed後面的介系詞遭強制刪去。因為在結構上that子句原來是要當介系詞的受詞,雖然介系詞遭刪,我們界定其為名詞子句。

He is overjoyed at the news. = 他聽到那消息而欣喜若狂。(overjoyed是屬於後面要用介系詞,然後才接名詞當受詞的形容詞,the news是介系詞at的受詞)

He was overjoyed that he saw me. =他非常高興看到我。(介系詞因為that子句而遭強制刪去)

後面接介系詞再接名詞為受詞的形容詞有:afraid, angry, aware, certain, happy, proud, sad, sorry, amused, annoyed, astonished, convinced, pleased, shocked等,但在受詞為that子句時,通常介系詞會遭強制刪除。

    如:He is afraid of snakes.

I was afraid of getting lost.

I was afraid that I might die.

    有些動詞也有類似的現象:

He warned me of their wicked design.

I warn you that it is dangerous.(that子句前的介系詞遭強制刪去)

    that子句用介系詞的例外:

I'm lucky in that I have three brothers.

Airline officials had nothnig to tell us except that the flight had been delayed.

R.A Close所著A Reference Grammar for Students of English p.77

    認為可以用介系詞來接名詞當受詞的形容詞,在接子句時,刪去了介系詞,所以這子句仍是形容詞的受詞(屬名詞子句)。

    但也有文法學者將形容詞後面的[這種that子句定位成[原因副詞子句]或[形容詞的補語子句]。請參見趙振才著<英語常見問題大詞典>pp.941-942

    不同於that-clause,wh-clause可當介系詞的受詞:

Success comes to whoever is ready for it.

Aren't you concerned about how long it will take?

I can't rely on what you tell me.

We'll find out whether it turns out to be a good idea or bad idea.

    2013-12-18 13:06:52 補充:

更正:Airline officials had nothnig to tell us except that the flight had been delayed.

    這裡的except是[連接詞]不是[介系詞]。

I could never learn this kind of grammar term correctly. Master LionEnglish! You always help me a great deal in this. Thanks a lot!

    2013-12-18 02:49:48 補充:

As for me, I would take it as an adverb clause. However, as an adverb, it shall be better to be used to describe verb. Now, you brought up adjective complement, it really makes sense to me.

    2013-12-18 03:00:05 補充:

What if, I rewrite the sentence as:

He overjoys that he is going to be a father.

Is this that-clause still a noun clause, but as an object now.

    2013-12-18 03:01:20 補充:

I further alter the sentence as:

It is surprised to him that he is going to be a father.

Is this that-clause still a noun clause, but as an object complement?

Master LionEnglish! I certainly know my shortcoming. Using grammar to explain really asking for trouble for myself. After all, I never actually learn grammar. However, I do learn quite a bit from you. Most of the time, I know the correct way to use, but I don't know why.

Your explanation in grammar helps me to know why. Thank you very much!
