統計的英文問題 ~20點

有2段關於統計的文章,其中有幾個問題想請教。(有些是翻譯問題,想求精確)

只回答部分問題也可以,有點急,感謝。

The very considerable statistical literature which has grown up on the use of moments of populations and samples, and on other quantities allied to these, is rendered confusing by variations in notation and terminology, and by the different aims which authors have had in view in using these quantities.The following notes aim at clarifying the subject by suggesting a uniform and consistent notation, specifying briefly the relations between the different quantities ordinarily used, and summarizing the result which have been obtained.

The distribution of a variable quantity x can be specified by means of a frequency function f, often termed the probability integral, specifying the total frequency in the population for which the variate is less than an assigned value x. For discontinuous distributions f will be a step function, increasing discontinuously at the values of x at which finite fractions of the total frequency are concentrated, and remaining constant between these values. For certain other distributions f is continuous and differentiable so that represents the frequency density in the element of range , or, the ordinate of a frequency curve at this point. 。These are the two common cases, but it is also possible for f to be continuous, but not differentiable, and so incapable of representation by a frequency curve.

整句也看不太懂,請解釋。其中element 是指元素嗎?

frequency density 直釋是次數密度,想問其意義?大學的統計有教到嗎?

另外element 是指dx的話,更看不懂了( in dx of range dx ??),可以幫我解釋一下這一句嗎?

    Q1.第一段第二行:

    quantities直譯是數量,但整句看起來很怪,有可能是指統計量嗎?

    population moment 是一種 quantity

    sample moment 也是一種 quantity

    other quantities allied to these 則是其他各種 quantity

    所以應該是指統計量。

    Q2.第二段的第一行:

    variable quantity x,我知道variable是變數,但後面加上quantity 需要翻譯嗎?還是可以省略?

    variable 名詞, 變數

    variable 形容詞, 可變的

    quantity 名詞, 數

    variable quantity 形容詞+ 名詞, 可變的數值

    在此處variable是形容詞。

    Q3第二段第四行:

    the values of x at which finite fractions of the total frequency are concentrated

    整句話的意思看不太懂,請解釋。其中finite fractions是指可化成小數的分數嗎?

    finite fractions在此處應該照字面解釋。

    Q4第二段第六行:

    these values 指的是x值嗎?還是?

    應該是。

    Q5第二段第七行:

    represents the frequency density in the element of range

    整句也看不太懂,請解釋。其中element 是指元素嗎?

    整句應該是:(漏了 df/dx 與 dx)

    其中element 是指 function element (函數元素),是指 dx。

    These questions of yours are all math terminologies. You cannot use its common meaning to translate.

    Like "quantities" is not translated as "數量", but "量" or "統計量"

    Yes, you have to. After all, "variable" can be many different things, here it means "量變數" or "統計量變數".
