Aydogan Ozcan : Infectious diseases take a lot of lives. That’s why we need technologies that could monitor, diagnose, and mitigate those diseases better, especially in developing countries. My name is Aydogan Ozcan. I’m an engineer and

What I do is engineering solutions for global health challenges

that leverage existing digital components, like cell phones

, by bringing new technologies running on cell phones, for instance, to diagnose diseases. And what is quite timely about this vision is that we have close to six billion cell phone subscribers today, and more than 70 percent of these cell phones are actually being used in developing parts of the world.

Some of the technology that we developed in our research lab that literally converts the cell phone itself into a platform that we can track, diagnose ,monitor diseases globally. What we have here is an attachment to the back of the camera of the phone, and then there is an application ─ smart application─running on the cell phone, which will essentially process a rapid diagnostic test that you insert.

So the healthcare worker will be inserting it into the back as shown here, and then there is a smart application running on the phone where you start a new test. And then there is a menu. We inserted here a malaria diagnostic test, so you click on “Malaria,” and what you see here is actually an image of the diagnostic test.

So you understand that all the user has to do is click on this image,and then now it’s captured that image and processed it in real time to tell us that it was a vaild test and the result was positive. Then the results can be uploaded to a central server, so that the policy makers or the healthcare workers can screen a region so they can understand the cause-effect relationships of some of the outcomes of different diseases that they are mitigating.
