Facebook: what, how and why?

The most popular Facebook feature reported in the studies is the ‘private group’ feature with 17 studies referring to its allowing students to share resources, post a comment, write on the wall, discuss, and so on.The group is always set as private for privacy and security reasons. Usually, participation in the group is not regulated by explicit rules and is not compulsory. The Facebook page feature is used in only four studies to expose students to resources and/or deliver course contents. In one study, the Facebook application programming interface (API) is considered, and in another the focus is on an application developed within the Facebook platform. However, in seven studies the use of Facebook is combined with other tools, such as Twitter, smartphones or traditional LMS (e.g., Moodle or Blackboard).

What is Facebook used for? Through our analysis of the papers we identified five main educational uses: (1)supporting discussion and allowing students to learn from each other through mutual understanding and critical thinking exercises (14 cases); (2) developing pieces of multimedia content (6 cases); (3) sharing resources (4 cases); (4) delivering content to expand the curriculum and expose students to external resources (3 cases); and (5) lastly, using it to support self-managed learning (2 cases).

With regard to the reasons for using Facebook in education, the most frequent was its popularity among young people with 16 papers emphasizing that students are familiar with it and so its features are easy to apply. Moreover, they spend more time on Facebook than on any other digital environment and this has a positive impact on motivation and engagement. Another argument is that Facebook matches the expectations of ‘millennial learners’ (four cases), who require new means for self-expression and information sharing surpassing traditional tools from the 21st century.
