Good explanation for using "at" or "on" the door!

On the River Thames? Is it a boat house?

In my opinion, using "at the River Thames" is like "at the lake", "at the beach".

They have a house __ on__ the River Thames.

Technically, because of "knocking", both "at" and "on" are correct.

The difference is whether you are emphasizing "where someone is" or "what someone is doing".

A house is "on" the river if one side (usually the back side) is on it, otherwise it is "by" the river.

Either way, you SHALT NOT say they have a houses "at" the river.
