Interaction with Other Experiences of Trauma

It’s just the way life is, you know? Bad thing after he bad thing. The military was supposed to be my escape. I mean, sure, I knew I might go to Iraq or Afghanistan but who knew I was going to get raped? It makes it hard to believe in anything. I just keep waiting for the other shoe to drop—because it will, eventually.

Finally, studies of both treatment-seeking and non treatment-seeking samples have found high rates of childhood and pre-military trauma among individuals ho enter the military, with these experiences being particularly prevalent jgféngst those who go on to experience sexual trauma in the military (Rosen & Fail-Martin, 1996; Sadler, Booth, Cook,& Doebbeling, 2003). Individuals deployed as part of OEF/OIF who experience sexual harassment and assault may also have had concurrent exposure to combat; even those Veterans not directly exposed to extensive combat trauma during deployment were likely confronted with the generalized decreased sense of safety that accompanies deployment to a warzone. This is salient because evidence from civilian samples indicates that exposure to multiple types of trauma increases the risk of negative mental health outcomes ( Cloitre , Scarvalone, & Difede, 1997; Follette, Polusny, Bechtle, Naugle, 1996), and studies of OEF/OIF Veterans have shown that prior exposure to sexual or physical assault increases the risk of mental health problems following combat exposure (Smith, Wingard, Ryan, et al., 2008).There are a variety of potential explanatory mechanisms for these findings but,in general, the effects of trauma appear to be dose-specific, suggesting that Veterans with pre—military trauma histories and/or with experiences of both combat and sexual trauma during deployment are likely to be at particular risk of readjustment difficulties and/ or more chronic complex problems (Vogt, King,& King, 2007).
