    (1) The weather in Canada is colder than the weather in Taiwan (is). (O)

    (2) The weather in Canada is colder than it is that in Taiwan. ( X)

    (3) The weather in Canada is colder than it is in Taiwan. (X)

    (4) The weather in Canada is colder than the weather is in Taiwan. (O)

    (5) The weather in Canada is colder than it is in Taiwan.(O)

    (6) The weather in Canada is colder than in Taiwan.(O)

    There are TWO issues in this question: pronoun and comparative:

    For pronoun:

    Usually, we use "it" as the pronoun for "weather".

    For comparative:

    You need to know what you want to compare. For example:

    Sentences (1)(2)(3)(5), it compares "the weather in Canada" and "the weather in Taiwan". In a word, it compares weather. "in Canada" and "in Taiwan" are prepositional phrases used to modify weather.

    Sentences (4)(6), it compares locations.

    typo!

    Sentences (1)(2)(3)(5) ==> Sentences (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)

    Sentences (4)(6) ==>Sentence (6)

    You also need to realize that "than" is a conjuction in these sentences. Even thought some people might argue it can be preposition. There is such an argument is because of the use:

    Tom is taller than I (am) : conjuction

    Tom is taller than me: preposition

    Even though we all fully agree that

    Tom is taller than I am

    is the most accurate one.

    However, we cannot ignore the use of

    Tom is taller than me

    than the weather in Taiwan is

    =than the weather is in Taiwan

    =than it is in Taiwan

    "in Taiwan" is preposition phrase, it is an adjective to describe the subject "the weather" or "it".

    Personally, I like

    The weather in Canada is colder than in Taiwan.

    Because it is more concise. The other are kind of wordy!
