1.Plenty of sleep-

Getting enough restful and restorative sleep is essential for preventing HTN and other chronic dis-cases. Numerous studies have linked inadequate sleep and or sleep apnea with HTN .I frequently check for sleep apnea in patients I see with HTN.AsI mentioned in a previous column on sleep, we should consider doing nocturnal oximetry or a formal sleep apnea test on any person diagnosed with HTN, especially if that patient is overweight.

2.Exercise-

Weight loss is crucial when it comes to pre-venting and treating HTN,and one of the ways to accomplish that is through a vigorous exercise program. Walking is fine,but exercise that really gets the heart pumping is more likely to help burn off visceral fat,which will then make a favorable impact on blood pressure(BP).A combination of aerobic and resistive exercise has been found to be the best strategy for weight loss.

3.A healthy diet-

Recommendations regarding dietary reg-imens for cardiovascular disease are varied, however, research has shown that both the DASH (Dietary Approaches to stop Hypertension) diet and the Mediterranean diet are particularly effective in efforts to prevent HTN, 2,3

The DASH diet is low in salt and high in potassium, mag-nesium,and fiber. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) look-ing at a comprehensive approach to manage BP in people with pre- or stage 1 HTN, found that, compared with controls,participants following the DASH diet alone had significant reductions in BP(11.2/7.5 mm Hg). In addition, when the DASH diet was combined with exercise and weight loss, had an even greater decrease in BP (16.1/9.9 mm Hg). 4 The authors commented that their findings suggested that the DASH diet, particularly when augmented by exercise and weight loss, can offer considerable benefit to patients with high BP, not only through reductions in BP but through favor-able modification of biomarkers of disease risk.
