.Taking a few months off to travel the world is generally seen as something young people do before they start their career. A leisurely vacation is taken by adult working men and women, and early retirement is seen as a comfortable extravagance.

.But there are a growing number of workers in their 30s, 40s or even 50s who are not simply taking a standard vacation; they are taking a “career break”—a few months or a year off of work in order not only to travel, but to do volunteer work, study new cultures and history, learn a new language, or fulfill some other lifelong dream.

.For most people, the main problem is determining when to take a break. Some take it between jobs, when they find themselves free of work responsibilities, while others simply take an extended leave of absence and then return to the same job. Reasons for career breaks also differ.

.In addition to the reasons already mentioned, some people want to experience an adventure, either before starting a family or simply because they have never done anything like that. Others prefer to wait until their children have grown up before taking an extended career break.

.If you are considering a career break, the best advice is to maintain your social network while you are away. Traveling far away can weaken connections to others (“Out of sight, out of mind” as the American idiom says).

.Keep in touch with your employer, co-workers, family and friends with e-mail, telephone calls, and technology such as Facebook and Skype. By keeping in touch you will maintain relationships, and it will be easier to return home and begin your life again, continue your job, or find a new one when you get back.
