Camels are called the "ships of the desert."Why? Well, like ships that carry goods and people across oceans ,camels carry goods and people across deserts. They are very important to people who live in the deserts.
Camels have been evolving for ages .The first camels appeared in North America ,40 or 45 million years ago. Around five million years ago, they crossed a land bridge into Asia and never came back. Camels have since died out in North America. There are now two types of camels: the dromedary or Arabian camel, which has one hump ,and the Bactrian camel , which has two .They all eventually became well adapted to life in the desert .Their feet evolved to be good for walking on the hot desert sand, and their bodies adapted to live for weeks without drinking water .Their fur is short and thick to protect them against sunburn and against sand storms. Also, their long eyelashes keep sand out of their eyes.
These useful creatures are kept by people as beasts of burden in harsh climates . Humans quickly discovered how useful they are ;camels may have been used by humans in the Middle East and China as early as 4000 BC. They were being used in Central Asia and Africa around 2000 BC. People also keep camels for their milk and meat . Camel milk is said to be richer in fat and protein than cow's milk . Camel meat has been eaten for centuries in Somalia, Saudi Arabia , Egypt ,Libya ,Sudan , Kazakhstan ,and other arid regions . In some regions , camel blood is regarded as a good source of iron ,vitamin D , salt , and minerals.
Camels are well known for their bad tempers , and they often show their anger by making a loud grunting sound . Nonetheless , they are so important that their owners don't mind . A camel can stand between life and death in the desert . Who cares about their bad moods?
