Loi was dreaming about the American soldier again when she was awakened by the songs of the buffalo boys. She blinked a moment until the familiar sounds of morning chased the dream away.

Without even going to her window, Loi knew exactly what the boys looked like. Sitting atop their water buffaloes, bamboo switches in their hands, the boys were urging the slow-moving bovines down the path toward the grazing pastures.

And she knew each song as surely as she knew her own name. The brothers Thinh and Trung, who were very young, sang happy songs in small, shrill voices. Crazy Hai couldn't speak, but his bamboo flute trilled out a haunting melody that echoed across the misty fields. But the best song of all, the one that glowed as warm as the mid-autumn moon, belonged to Khai. Of all the songs, Khai's was the one that told a tale of true love; of all the songs, Khai's was meant for her.

Loi smiled to herself and curled her knees up closer to her chest. She knew it was time to get up. Soon the sun would stretch its rosy fingers over the jagged mountain peaks and spread its mellow light over the cluster of huts that seemed to float in a sea of golden rice.

But Loi wanted to stay curled up just a moment longer. Just until Khai's last sweet notes had echoed over the rice fields. Just until the dull clop-clop of cloven hooves on soft earth and the occasional bovine snort had faded away.

    Loi

She knew it was time to get up.

Soon the sun would stretch its rosy fingers over the jagged mountain peaks and spread its mellow light over the cluster of huts that seemed to float in a sea of golden rice.

But Loi wanted to stay curled up just a moment longer.

Just until Khai's last sweet notes had echoed over the rice fields.

Just until the dull clop-clop of cloven hooves on soft earth and the occasional bovine snort had faded away.
