As she padded lightly down the worn path at a steady rhythmic gait, listening to frogs leaping out of her way into the irrigation ditches, she prayed for two things. She prayed that there would be no snakes in the path, and she prayed that there would be no people at the well. This morning she did not feel she could bear the usual prying stares and unkind re- marks about her looks or her height. Today she just wanted to think about standing beside Khai, cutting row after row of dried rice stalks, exchanging secret smiles and glances. She began to softly sing Khai's sweet buffalo song.

When she reached the well, only one person was there, a boy of about eighteen. Although Loi was one year younger than the boy, she towered over him. She stood to one side looking at the ground, waiting for him to finish. When he was through, she stepped up. He didn't offer to help her with the awkward water baskets and walked away without speaking.

Loi didn't mind; silence was her old friend.

She lowered the baskets one at a time until she heard soft splashes and felt the heaviness of water inside them. They were cumbersome to hoist, but her arms were strong and hard from years of lifting water baskets and bags of rice and bundles of firewood.

As she padded lightly down the worn path at a steady rhythmic gait, listening to frogs leaping out of her way into the irrigation ditches, she prayed for two things.

She prayed that there would be no snakes in the path, and she prayed that there would be no people at the well.

This morning she did not feel she could bear the usual prying stares and unkind remarks about her looks or her height.

Today she just wanted to think about standing beside Khai, cutting row after row of dried rice stalks,

    exchanging secret smiles and glances.

    Loi

She lowered the baskets one at a time until she heard soft splashes and felt the heaviness of water inside them.

They were cumbersome to hoist, but her arms were strong and hard from years of lifting water baskets

and bags of rice and bundles of firewood.
