"True. But his eyesight is gone now. You are his eyes and soul, he loves you so much, and you are the best carver. Why don't you try to sell your figurines at the market in Da Lat? I could take some with me when Ma and I go to sell our vegetables. Your cousins are going to take baskets and Mrs. Tran is going to take her embroidery work to sell. I know you could make some money"

Khai shook his head slowly.

"My father thinks carving is a foolish waste of time. He thinks all things of beauty are useless and only mean trouble. . . Perhaps that is why he dislikes you so much, because of your beauty"

Loi turned away for a moment and felt heat flooding over her face. She bit her lip to keep from smiling, so he wouldn't think she was so vain as to care about compliments.

"Why do you call me beautiful when all the other villagers call me ugly and con-hoang--fatherless child? See, my hair is not as thick and straight^ black as yours, and my eyes do not have the beautiful slant of yours. And my skin—how I detest these freckles on my nose! I want to look like you and your family. I hate being different." Loi plopped down on the edge of the well and stared at her hands in her lap. Even they were ugly—long and large, not tiny and delicately tapered like her mother's. Khai frowned and crossed his arms as he sat beside her.

    *Da Lat

    Khai shook his head slowly.

    Khai

"My father thinks carving is a foolish waste of time. He thinks all things of beauty are useless and only mean trouble. . . Perhaps that is why he dislikes you so much, because of your beauty"

Loi turned away for a moment and felt heat flooding over her face.

    Loi

She bit her lip to keep from smiling, so he wouldn't think she was so vain as to care about compliments.

"Why do you call me beautiful when all the other villagers call me ugly and con-hoang--fatherless child? See, my hair is not as thick and straight^ black as yours, and my eyes do not have the beautiful slant of yours. And my skin—how I detest these freckles on my nose! I want to look like you and your family. I hate being different."

Loi plopped down on the edge of the well and stared at her hands in her lap.

    Loi

Even they were ugly—long and large, not tiny and delicately tapered like her mother's.

Khai frowned and crossed his arms as he sat beside her.

    Khai
