Passes and Exposures

Exposures as opposed to passes is a subject of confusion in the industry. Some color desktop scanners use a three-pass, three-exposure system to capture color images: the object is scanned three times, once each with a red, green and blue filter placed between the object and the CCD. The three exposures are recombined in the computer to create a color image.

As technology advanced, color scanners that captured an image in one pass were developed. These one-pass scanners still capture the image in three exposures: one red, one green and one blue. The exposures are recombined, either in the scanner or in the computer, to create a color image. One-pass, three-exposure scanners are the most common technology used today.

A third class of scanners, beam-splitting scanners, capture the image in one pass and one exposure. This scanner can offer added flexibility and speed compared to multiple-exposure scanners (either one- or three-pass).

In the next sections we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different kinds of scanners in use today.
