It’s believed that a friend in need is a friend indeed, that is to say, the person who must be ready to help you work out at all times no matter what happened is a very true friend. Someone that may turn down your request when you’re in trouble will never be called a friend. It seems that doing something clearly visible is good for developing friendship. However, I think this proverb has another explanation. If the friend doesn’t get acquainted with all the details of your sufferings, maybe not to try creating wonders on those difficulties in a hurry but keeping company with you in silence can make things better. As the old saying goes, “A problem shared is a problem halved.” After all, having someone you can confide in is a real blessing.
