    noun phrase can function as the subject or object of a verb, or the object of a preposition:-eg:-(A) is only one selection:-eg:-

    He paid $25000 for a red car.

    The salesman let the driver tried a red car.

    --------In this pattern the preposition is for/tried + a noun phrase.

    He drove away in a red car.

    ------In this pattern the preposition is in + a noun phrase.

    He got a red car------as object

    A red car is the racing car for him to compete in speed.-----as subject.

    (B) very dry----adverb phrase

    (C) Let's take a break---a state, a sentence

    (D) Tom runs fast----an action, a sentence

    = as subject.
