For reasons beyond explanations, when a computer part is stored for a long time, there is no guarantee that it will not malfunction. Keep in mind - just because the parts have been removed from a functioning computer, it does not mean it carries no electric charge, such as static.

Proper storage will reduce the chance, but not eliminate.
